Arisi Upma Kozhakattai (Rice Modaks)

This is one of the tastiest South Indian snack dishes. I love this and can have this every day, if given a chance. This is also called pundi in Mangalore or arisi upma. This is made with rice rava. I have made a similar recipe with broken wheat that you can find here.

Cook Time: 1 hr

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Idli rawa

  • 1 and 1/4 cup Water

To make a paste

  • 2 tbsp Tur dal

  • 4-5 Green chillies

  • 1 tsp Hing

  • 3-4 Curry leaves

  • Salt, to taste

For tempering

  • 1 tbsp Oil

  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds

  • 1 tsp Urad dal

  • 3 Red chillies

Instructions

  1. Soak the tur dal for an hour in hot water

  2. Grind all the ingredients to make a fine paste without adding much water

  3. In a pan take oil, splutter mustard seeds, urad dal and red chillies

  4. Add water, adjust salt and mix

  5. Add the paste and boil the water

  6. Add the idli rava and cook till the water almost dries up (do not make it very thick as it will thicken once cool). Cool this.

  7. Once cooled, make small oval shaped balls

  8. Steam it in the idli cooker like idlis

  9. Best had hot with coconut chutney
