Green Whole Moong Dal

This is a very tasty dal, especially the combination of onion and coconut ground to paste.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Green moong dal

  • Salt, to taste

  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder

Roast and grind to a paste

  • 1 Sliced onions

  • 1 Sliced tomatoes

  • 1/2 tbsp Grated ginger

  • 1 tsp Chilli powder

  • 3 tbsp Fresh grated coconut

  • 1/4 cup Roughly chopped coriander leaves

  • 2 tsps Oil

For tempering

  • 1 tbsp Oil

  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds

  • 5-7 Curry leaves

Instructions

  1. Pressure cook the moong dal till it is just about cooked. Take care not to mash it and keep aside.

  2. In a pan take 1 tbsp of oil and add onions and ginger and saute till it becomes brown

  3. Add tomatoes and saute well till the tomatoes becomes mushy

  4. Add chilli powder and salt and saute for a minute

  5. Add the coconut, and coriander leaves, mix well and turn off the gas

  6. Grind this to a paste adding very little water

  7. In the same pan add 1 tbsp of oil, splutter mustard seeds and add curry leaves

  8. Add the cooked moong dal and the ground mixture, mix well and boil for a few minutes, turn off the gas

  9. Serve hot with rotis or with steamed rice
