Hayagreeva Maddi is a sweet sundal offered everyday to the deities of Sri Sode Vadiraja Matt, Udipi. According to mythology, this sweet was offered to Lord Hayagreeva and hence the name. Even today, this sweet has to be offered everyday at the mutt. Lord Hayagreeva is worshipped as a God for knowledge and wisdom.

Ingredients
1 cup Chana dal
3/4 cup Grated jaggery
3 tbsp Ghee
1 tbsp khus khus, roasted
2 tbsp broken cashew nuts and raisins
1/2 tsp Cardamom powder
4 tbsp Fresh grated coconut, for garnishing
Instructions
Soak chana dal for 1 hour and cook this in a pressure cooker for 2-3 whistles (the dal should be soft but do not mash it), drain the dal
In a thick bottom pan add the cooked dal and the jaggery and start cooking till the moisture evaporates
In a pan take 1 tbsp ghee and roast the cashew nuts and raisins
Add the roasted khus khus, cashew nuts and raisins to the dal mixture and mix well
Add cardamom powder and mix well, switch off the flame once the water dries up
Garnish with grated coconut and serve hot
Notes
You can cook the dal in open flame if you have a doubt on how many whistles to give but make sure the dal is not overcooked.
