Kichdi and Kadhi (Gujarati Style)

This is a very popular gujarati cuisine. This is very palatable and is best had when you want some simple soul food. Kichdi-Kadhi is a one pot meal and can be had with papad and/or pickle.

Ingredients

For the kichdi

  • 1 cup Rice

  • 3/4 cup Green moong dal

  • salt to taste

  • 3 Finely chopped green chillies

  • 2 tbsp + 2 tbsps Ghee

  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds

  • 1 tsp Hing

  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder

  • 1/4 cup Cluster beans cut into 2 (optional)

For the kadhi

  • 1 cup Curd

  • 3 cups water

  • salt to taste

  • 1 & 1/2 tbsp Besan

  • 1 tsp Hing

  • 2 Finely chopped green chillies

  • 1/2 tsp Methi seeds

  • 1 tsp Sugar

  • 3-4 Curry leaves

  • 2 tsp Ghee

  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds

  • for garnish Finely chopped coriander leaves

Instructions

For the kichdi

  1. Soak the moong dal overnight

  2. In a pressure cooker add ghee and splutter cumin seeds

  3. Add the hing, turmeric powder and the green chillies

  4. Add the soaked rice and dal and mix well

  5. Add salt and the cluster beans, if adding and then mix well for 2-3 mins

  6. Add water and give 2-3 whistles

  7. Once done, you can garnish with 1 tbsp of ghee on top and have hot with Kadhi

For the kadhi

  1. Mix the curd, water and besan and beat well with a beater

  2. In a saucepan, add the ghee and splutter methi seeds and cumin seeds

  3. Add green chillies, curry leaves and hing and mix well

  4. Add the curd-besan mixture and keep cooking on slow gas (even if it curdles keep cooking)

  5. Add the salt and sugar

  6. Cook till done (it should not be thick, it should be watery with a blended consistency)

  7. Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves
