Aval Payasam (Poha Kheer) - Type 1

This is another type of poha kheer made on Gokulashtami day. This kheer is very tasty though it is a bit more lengthier than the other one and can be served as a normal dessert.

Cook Time: 45 mins


Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Thick poha

  • 2 & 1/2 cups Full cream milk

  • 3/4 cup Sugar

  • 1 tsp cardamom powder

  • 5 Broken cashew nuts

  • 1 + 1 tsp Ghee

For paste

  • 5 cashew nuts

  • 1 tsp Khuskhus

  • 2 tbsp Fresh grated coconut

  • Evaporated (thickened) milk, to grind the above

Instructions

  1. Wash the poha and drain

  2. In a pan take 1 tsp ghee and sauté the poha in sim flame for 8-10 mins till it changes colour slightly, keep aside

  3. In a heavy bottom non stick pan add the milk and boil on sim flame stirring continuously

  4. When it reduces a bit add the sugar and keep stirring

  5. Add cardamom powder

  6. Grind the paste ingredients to a smooth paste and add this to the boiling milk

  7. Add the sautéed poha to the milk and keep cooking till the poha becomes soft

  8. Once well combined switch off the flame

  9. In a pan take 1 tsp ghee and sauté the broken cashews till light brown

  10. Add this to the kheer. Serve hot or cold.
