Steamed Modak (Salt)

This is the salted version of steamed modaks. We make this and sweet modaks on Ganesh Chaturthi. The shape of these modaks is different from the sweet modaks. This is shaped like a boat or a leaf.

Ingredients

For the filling

  • 1/2 cup Urad dal

  • Salt, to taste

  • 4 Green chillies

  • 1 tsp Hing

  • 5 Curry leaves

For tempering

  • Oil

  • Mustard seeds

Instructions

  1. Soak the urad dal for half an hour

  2. Drain the water from the urad dal and keep aside for 10 minutes

  3. Add salt, green chillies, hing and curry leaves and grind this to a coarse paste adding very little or no water

  4. Make small portions of the ground mixture and steam it in an idli plate

  5. Once steamed and cool, crumble it (if you are not able to crumble it evenly, put it in a blender)

  6. In a pan take oil and splutter mustard seeds

  7. Add the crumbled mixture and saute it on sim flame for 5 minutes and cool

To proceed

  1. Take a ball of the outer covering dough*

  2. Grease your fingers with til oil

  3. Make a depression in the centre and form a small cup

  4. Put 1 small spoon of the filling into the cup

  5. Seal the edges as it is (it should resemble a leaf or a boat)

  6. Steam the modaks in an idli cooker lined with banana leaf
